How to choose fabric count for a cross-stitch pattern

Fabric count changes the finished size and feel of a project. This guide helps shoppers understand the practical choice before starting a new pattern.

What fabric count means

Fabric count tells you how many stitches fit into one inch of fabric. A 14-count fabric has 14 stitches per inch, while an 18-count fabric has 18 stitches per inch. The higher number creates a smaller finished piece when the stitch count stays the same.

Quick rule: finished width in inches = stitch width ÷ fabric count. Finished height works the same way.

How to choose

Do not forget extra border fabric

The finished design size is not the fabric cut size. Add extra fabric around all sides for framing, hooping, or finishing. Many stitchers like a generous border so the project is easier to handle.

Before buying a large pattern

Check the product page for stitch size, color count, file notes, and whether a Pattern Keeper-friendly PDF is included. If a new pattern has dimensions being confirmed, wait for the final number before cutting fabric.
